There is no exterior indication that the filter needs to be changed, but you can estimate when it needs to be changed based on how often you are filling it. The top reservoir holds about 1/2 gallon and the life of the filter is 100 gallons. If you fill the top reservoir twice a day, you’re filtering about one gallon per day. In that case, the filter would need to be changed in 100 days, or just over three months.*

*If your tap water is heavily contaminated (most likely if you live in a large or older city), your filter must work harder to keep your water clean, which will decrease the life of the filter.
